Diet and lifestyle changes most people with IBS can help, but does not work any treatment for all. Generally, with few fundamental changes in diet and activities, IBS will improve over time. Some steps you can take to help reduce symptoms IBS: Avoid caffeine (coffee, tea and refreshments). Increase fiber in your diet (found in fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts). Drink at least three to four glasses of water a day. Do not smoke. Learn to relax or do more exercise or reduce stress in your life. Try to limit the amount of milk and cheese you eat. Eat smaller meals more often or eating smaller portions. However, if you have IBS and are concerned about your calcium intake, you can try other sources of calcium. These sources include broccoli, spinach, turnip greens, tofu, yogurt, sardines and salmon with bones, calcium-fortified orange juice and bread, and some calcium supplements acid pills. Keep track of the foods you eat to help you determine what foods on access to IBS. Common food "triggers" IBS are red peppers, onions, red wine, wheat and cow's milk. Antispasmotics drug treatments can be prescribed to control muscle spasms of the colon, but experts are not sure that these drugs are an important role in the treatment of IBS. They also have side effects such as drowsiness and constipation, which still limit its use. Diarrhea medicine like Imodium, may contribute to diarrhea. Laxatives can be useful in the short term treatment of constipation associated with IBS. Bulking agents such as psyllium, wheat bran and corn fiber, can slow the movement of food through the digestive system and can also help relieve symptoms. Antidepressants may be prescribed to help relieve symptoms. Zelnorm is available for patients with certain restrictions serious. The drug was withdrawn in March 2007 because of evidence that it increases the risk of heart attack and stroke. But July 2007, the FDA ruled that Zelnorm can be used by some patients in critical need of the drug that has no heart problems. The FDA is restricting the use of Zelnorm for treatment of the syndrome irritable bowel with constipation (IBS-C) and chronic idiopathic constipation (CIC) in women aged under 55 who meet specific guidelines. It is important to follow doctor's instructions when taking IBS medications - particularly laxatives, which can be addictive if not used carefully.
